Yoga for Seniors

Yoga has been gaining in popularity because of the immense physical and mental benefits the practice provides. Almost instinctively when people think about yoga, they think contortionists; however, that is not the case. The act of yoga is merely moving with breath no matter what shape the physical body may take.

BENEFITS

Some of the benefits practitioners see after practicing yoga regularly include the following:

  • Improved Balance
Improved balance is one of the most important benefits of yoga as you get older. More advanced one-legged balancing poses can be done by opting for modifications or using support as you are building up your balance.
  • Reduced Back Pain
Many people with back pain spend a lot of time sitting, which causes tightness throughout the body and spinal compression. Yoga counteracts these conditions by increasing strength and flexibility in the back.
  • Improved Flexibility
Moving and stretching will increase flexibility and range of motion in tight areas. Over time, yoga can increase flexibility in your hamstrings, back, shoulders, and hips. As we age, flexibility tends to decrease, especially if you spend a lot of time sitting, which leads to immobility and possibly pain. Yoga can help reverse this process.
  • Increased Strength and Muscle Tone
Yoga does a significant amount of work with body weight. Holding the poses for several breaths helps build muscle strength. As a by-product of getting stronger, you will begin to see increased muscle tone.
  • Improved Joint Health
Yoga is a low impact exercise that is easy on the joints. The practice also builds strength in the muscles around the joints. People with arthritis often see improvement in their pain and mobility with a regular gentle yoga practice.
  • Mental Calmness and Stress Reduction
Yoga works to connect the mind and body. By bringing awareness to the physical body and breath, it brings a calmness to your mind. Yoga also emphasizes being in the present moment and not dwelling on the past or future, which helps with anxiety and stress reduction.
